SAFE MOTHERHOOD AND CHILD SURVIVAL PROJECT
Introduction
More than half a million women die every year of complications during pregnancy or childbirth. Majority of these deaths can be avoided if the existing medical interventions are well known. The key obstacle is pregnant women's lack of access to quality care before, during and after childbirth.
The Safe Motherhood and Child Survival project was initiated in the year 2003 in partnership with Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of Gujarat.

Out of the several health initiatives taken by the Government of Gujarat, Mobile Comprehensive Health Care Units (MHU) is an innovative approach to cater to the reproductive and child health (RCH) needs of the communities. Deepak Foundation, in partnership with the Government of Gujarat, has undertaken the operations of MHU in the interior and bordering areas of Primary Health Centers in Pavi Jetpur and Naswadi taluka in Vadodara district to serve the neglected tribal areas.

Anemia Control Programme
More than half (58%) of the maternal deaths occurring in the tribal blocks of Naswadi, Pavi Jetpur, Kawant and Chhota Udepur in Vadodara district, have been attributed to severe anemia (surveyed by Deepak Foundation). Only providing Iron Folic Acid tablets as part of the government’s strategy may not be sufficient. A holistic program is therefore the need of the hour.
Keeping this in view, the Anemia Control Program (ACP) was initiated in all the blocks of Vadodara district as part of the Safe Motherhood and Child Survival Project.
